A gas jar is used in microbiology. A flame is lit in the airtight jar which starts using up the oxygen in the jar and producing carbon dioxide. This creates an environment that is lower in oxygen than the normal atmosphere and creates a perfect environment for microaerophilic microbes which need a low concentration of oxygen in order to grow.
